Claims and sustainability

We’re committed to finding creative, sustainable solutions to how we handle claims.

Sustainable practices

Drying-in-place

If drywall is dampened by clean water, instead of ripping it out, we bring in high-powered fans within 72 hours to begin the drying process. This prevents mould, drastically lessens disturbance and inconvenience to clients, reduces environmental impact, and saves money.

Soft contents cleaning

Instead of throwing away furniture, clothing, and other soft material items, we use special cleaning equipment to return the items to their original state — or better.

TomorrowStrongTM

With our TomorrowStrongTM coverage, you can receive up to $3,000 extra after a claim if you replace or repair a damaged roof with roofing materials that offer better protection against hail and wind. You can also get up to $1,500 after a claim for installing hurricane straps, which secure your roof to the walls and make it more resistant to hurricanes and tornados. Other preventative measures, such as a water leak detector, sump pump, surge protector, etc. could qualify you for additional support of up to $1,000.

Sustainable partnerships

Eco-friendly networks

Following a claim, we supply a list of vendors, contractors and repair shops committed to energy conservation, emissions reduction and more. This ensures that clients have the option of rebuilding with sustainability in mind.

Zero-waste initiative

We divert waste and promote the circular economy in claims through the Zero Waste Economic Transformation Lab. As the Lab’s founding supporter, we help to sustainably divert materials away from landfills and keep them in the local economy.

ReClaim program

We run the Co-operators ReClaim program in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. This unique program provides Habitat for Humanity ReStores with good-quality materials salvaged from a home claim. The *ReStores then sell the materials to fund Habitat for Humanity building projects across Canada. Here’s a list of salvageable items Habitat for Humanity ReStores* accept:

  • Quality building materials (windows, doors, lighting fixtures, paint, lumber, hardware)
  • Kitchen cabinets
  • Appliances
  • Furniture
  • Home décor items

If you need to make a home claim, ask your claims representative about the Co-operators ReClaim program. It’s another way we can help give back to our communities.

*Regional differences do apply at ReStores, and can vary over time. Check with your local ReStore for a full list of acceptable items. ReStores do not accept clothes, food or baby products.
