Leading the way to a net-zero future
We have set targets to eliminate the emissions of our operations and investments.
Our net-zero journey and targets
We have been carbon neutral since 2020.
We will achieve net zero in our operations by no later than 2040.
We will achieve net zero in our investments by no later than 2050.
We have a target to increase investments in climate solutions, from US$2 billion in 2024 to US$3 billion by the end of 2030. This includes piloting a climate resilience and adaptation investment strategy through the Co-operators Resilience Acceleration Lab in collaboration with Addenda Capital.
Climate solutions are defined as investments in economic activities considered to contribute to climate change mitigation (including transition enabling) or adaptation, in line with existing climate related-sustainability taxonomies and other generally acknowledged frameworks, as defined by the Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA) Target-Setting Protocol Fourth Edition.
Co-operators was the first Canadian insurer to join the NZAOA, which includes over 80 asset owners from across the globe that have committed to transitioning their investment portfolios to net-zero by 2050.
Advocacy
Our vision is to be a catalyst for a resilient, sustainable society. We work with partners in Canada and internationally to advance policies and practices that will help shape a net-zero, sustainable, and climate-resilient future.
Investing in climate-resilient communities
There is an urgent need to accelerate adaptation efforts in our communities to reduce the impacts of worsening physical climate risk. We are working with municipalities, Indigenous partners, scientists and businesses to find opportunities that will accelerate the development of climate-resilience projects in Canada.
